“Ενώ ο Ιλισός ξεκίνησε τη λατρεία μου για το σώμα στην αρχαιοελληνική τέχνη, η κυκλαδική τέχνη μου κάλεσε να δω την μαγεία από κοντά.

Τα κυκλαδικά ειδώλια έχουν μια ενέργεια που δεν μπορώ να περιγράψω σε καμία γλώσσα, ήθελα όμως να απεικονίσω το συναίσθημα. Αποφάσισα τότε να ζωγραφίσω τη δική μου εκδοχή του βιολόσχημου ειδωλίου, μπορεί να είναι μια θεότητα, κάτι μυστικιστικό ή μυθικό, μια μακρύλαιμη «θεά ή μητέρα», όπως το ονόμασα.

Είναι το πρώτο έργο, ζωγραφισμένο με στύλο χρυσού 24Κ, που έκανα στην Αθήνα και είναι η πρώτη φορά που παρουσιάζεται ποτέ, στην ίδια πόλη όπου γεννήθηκε”.

While Ilissos started my fascination with the body in ancient Greek art, Cycladic art called me to see the magic up close.

Cycladic figurines have an energy that I cannot describe in any language, but I wanted to portray the feeling. I decided then to draw my own version of the violin-shaped figurine, it could be a deity, something mystical or mythical, a “Long-necked Goddess or Mother”, as I’ve titled it.

It is the first work, drawn in 24k goldpoint, that I did in Athens and it is exhibited for the first time ever in the same city where it was born.

In the artists own words:

“I like to think of these works as whispers: whispered hymns, whispered praises, whispers heard through a crack in a window, whispers murmured from my subconscious. They are fragmented journal entries about my day-to-day, my body, and my thoughts, sensually drawn with a piece of gold and silver. I am particularly inspired by the presence of Greek marble sculptures and Japanese sumi ink drawings. Both are heavy in weight, whether it be because of the physicality of the marble or because of the darkness of the black ink, and yet there is a more prominent air which circulates them. This calm, quiet air continues to captivate me and I want each self-portrait and figure to permeate that space so antithetical to my reality.”
